February 1, 2010, New York City, NY – Park East Cardiovascular Associates
In 2010, an estimated 450,000 women will die from cardiovascular disease in the United States. In an effort to help the women of New York avoid becoming a part of this statistic, the physicians at Park East Cardiovascular, Dr. Mark B. Schiffer, Dr. Paul P. Romanello, Dr. Ira S. Blaufarb, Dr. Donna A. Ingram, and Dr. Nicholas DuBois, are joining in the American Heart Association’s national Go Red for Women Day on Friday, February 5th.
In honor of Go Red for Women Day, Park East Cardiovascular will offer free blood pressure screenings from 9am-12pm on February 5th at their offices in Manhattan. High blood pressure is an important risk factor for cardiovascular disease that can lead to heart attacks, stroke, and even congestive heart failure. Park East Cardiovascular specializes in helping patients mitigate their risk factors for cardiovascular disease to avoid needing treatment for more serious conditions.
Women have a high risk of developing cardiovascular disease due to factors that do not affect men including oral contraceptives and low estrogen levels following menopause. “Women need to be proactive about their heart health,” says Dr. Ingram. “Often there are no preliminary symptoms for cardiovascular disease, which makes screening for the risk factors essential to maintaining a heart healthy lifestyle.”
The Go Red for Women campaign is a national movement to spread awareness about women’s heart health. As a part of the American Heart Association, the Go Red for Women campaign seeks to change the misconception that cardiovascular disease is a “man’s disease,” because in reality more women die of heart disease each year than men.
Park East Cardiovascular will also celebrate by collecting donations for the American Heart Association. The American Heart Association encourages everyone to wear red to show solidarity and commitment to educating women about heart health. On Feb. 5th the Park East Cardiovascular staff will all be wearing red Park East Cardiovascular T-shirts to show our commitment and will make those T-shirts available for sale. All proceeds will be donated to the American Heart Association.
